Action for Children’s latest group of Construction “newbies” spent the day with McTaggart Construction at our two sites for Parkhead Housing Association.
10 young people took part in the day programme that consisted of:
Construction Career readiness talk, focusing on the commitment and initiative required by young people to succeed in the industry delivered by our Community Benefit Officer Ross Hammell.
A site visit to Duke Street, young people were guided around the early stages of a traditional build flat development for Parkhead Housing Association.
Our Site Manager Scott McVey arranged for the young people to try their hand at bricklaying. The young people also learned about the site Health and Safety procedures and the pace of daily working life.
The young people then spent the afternoon at the Springfield Road site where guided by site manager John Murray.
The young people were shown around the different stages and trades on site and given a detailed talk on the build process.
Connor Costello recently recruited from Youth Build as a McTaggart site operative at Springfield Road also spoke to the group about his experiences joining the construction industry.
The Young people experienced for the first time working at height, which was good preparation for their PASMA course later in the programme.
Young people from the Youth Build programme will now have the option to take up a work placement at the Parkhead Housing sites.
